Opelousas A funeral service will be held for William Gene Matthews at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Deacon Dwayne Joubert will celebrate the service. Rite of Committal will be held at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Matthews, age 64, a resident of Ville Platte, LA, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana.

Gene served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed hunting, watching movies and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed tending to his four dogs. Gene will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

Survivors are his wife, of 8 years, Cynthia Cindy Dupre Matthews, of Ville Platte, LA his father, Charles C.J. Joseph Matthews of Poplarville, MS his sons, William Joseph Joe Matthews and wife, Elisha, of Opelousas, LA Jeffery Lynn Matthews and companion, Klay Johnson, of Baton Rouge, LA his first wife and the mother of his sons, Debra Tabb Matthews, of Opelousas, LA his stepdaughters, Callie Young Vidrine and husband, Bret, of Denham Springs, LA Jenna Cay Young and fianc, Tre Stoma of Lake Charles, LA his brothers, Timothy Timmy Matthews and wife, Kathy, of Poplarville, MS Charles Potty Matthews and wife, Diane, of Poplarville, MS and his sister, Linda Matthews Murphy and husband, Bill Murphy of Poplarville, MS. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Samantha Kay Matthews, Brandon Michael Hollier, Victoria Paige Matthews, Catherine Grace Vidrine and Dominic Bret Vidrine.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ida Lambert Matthews his son, Bryan Keith Matthews and his stepdaughter, Jessica Nicole Young.

Visitation will be held at the LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Friday, July 11, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Pallbearers will be Klay Johnson, Bret Vidrine, Tre Stoma, Timmy Matthews, Charles Matthews and James Jourty.
