Vernita Stelly

Opelousas A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Vernita Stears Stelly, age 73, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011 in the St. Landry Catholic Church, followed by interment in the Bellevue Memorial Park. The Reverend James Brady will be the celebrant of the Mass.

Vernita, who was a native of Grand Prairie and a resident of Opelousas, died on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at Opelousas General Health System.

Ms. Stelly loved arts and crafts, working with flowers in her yard and spending time with her loving family. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her son, Gilbert Stelly, Jr. and wife Janice of Grand Prairie daughters, Yvonne and husband Maxwell Fink of Opelousas, Linda Gail and husband John Benoit of Opelousas, Dianne and husband Marcus Flournoy of Baton Rouge, Ramona and husband Harold Bourque of Opelousas and Cathy and husband Keith Venable of Church Point grandchildren, Bart and wife Lydia Fink, John and wife Sheire Benoit, Derek and wife Beverly Benoit, Emma Benoit, Chad Benoit, Michael and wife Katie Flournoy, Brandon Stelly, Rebecca Stelly and fiance Jeremy Higdon, Tanya and husband Chuck Doucet, Toby Nodine, Trista Reed, Tessie and husband Chris Rideaux, Joshua Bourque, George Venable, Erica and fiance Lucas Venable, and Shelly and Anthony David 17 great grandchildren a host of nieces and nephews and also her grand dog, Festus.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Stelly parents, Wilfred and Lucille Stears brother, Lloyd Stears and a nephew, Glenn Stears.

Pallbearers will be Bart Fink, John Benoit, JR, Michael Flournoy, Brandon Stelly, Toby Nodine, and George Venable. Honorary pallbearers will be Derek Benoit, Chad Benoit and Joshua Bourque.

Visiting hours will be observed in the LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday until service time on Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
