Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church for Velma Soileau Thibodeaux, age 92, who passed away Saturday morning, November 4, 2017 at Courtyard Retirement and Assisted Living. Reverend Monsignor Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and Burial will be held at Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Velma was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She honored the Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary daily. Velma worked as a telephone operator for Bell South Telephone Company for 18 years. She loved gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she was a long-time member of the Opelousas Garden Club. She also loved shopping excursions and finding bargains. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her five children, Jo Ann Cortez and husband, Glenn of Opelousas, Louisiana; Peggy Bradford and husband, Leroy Hotaling of Coppell, Texas; Timothy Thibodeaux and wife, Alina of Church Point, Louisiana; Gary Thibodeaux and wife, Missy of Opelousas, Louisiana; and Barney Thibodeaux and wife, Sandy of Lewisville, Texas.
She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Glenn David Cortez, junior and wife, Elisabeth; Christopher Chad Cortez; Alisha Cortez Higgins and husband, Scott; Ryan Bradford; Rachel Bradford Higgs; Nicholas Thibodeaux; Katie Thibodeaux Jeffers and husband, Brandon; Allison Thibodeaux Babineaux and husband, Russell; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Burke Soileau and wife, Barbara; and one sister, Gayle Soileau and husband, Charles.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Percy Thibodeaux; her parents, Claude and Anna Soileau; her sister, Betty Valin; and her grandson, Jude David Cortez.
Visitation will be held at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon by Monsignor Keith DeRouen at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
