Vela Montgomery

Washington A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Vela Mae Montgomery, the former Vela Mae Soileau, at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, La. Reverend Jarrod Suire will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Montgomery, age 85, who was a native of Whiteville, La and resident of Washington, La., died on Monday, April 28, 2014.

Vela loved her flower gardens and received Garden of the Month award several times. She enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Cajun Ramblers Dance Club. She was a wonderful baker and was a prolific fruit cake maker, a seamstress and upholsterer. She gave back to her community by volunteering her time with the Council on Aging. She loved spending time with family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors are her sons, William Montgomery, III and wife, Patrice, of Opelousas, La. Daniel Montgomery and wife, Sue, of Opelousas, La. Eddie Montgomery of Leonville, La. Donald Montgomery and wife, Barbara, of Prairie Ronde, La. Fred Montgomery and wife, Missy, of Melville, La. her daughters, Elaine Richard and husband, Joe, of Grand Prairie, La. Nancy Bridges and husband, Clark, of Opelousas, La. Paula Deranger and husband, Paul, of Grand Prairie, La. and her daughterinlaw, Janet Reed Montgomery. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 41 greatgrandchildren and 2 greatgreat grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bubba Jefferson Montgomery, Jr. her parents, Leonard Edward and Nancy Alice Soileau her son, Richard K. Montgomery, Sr. her brothers, Willard, Allie, Perry, Errol Soileau her grandsons, Tracy Richard, Joseph Richard, III and her greatgrandson, Caleb Billeaudeaux.

Visitation will be held at LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will reopen on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be William J. Montgomery, IV, Anthony Murrow Montgomery, Stephen Scott Montgomery, Andrew Paul Deranger, Frederick W. Billeaudeaux, David Baker, III and honorary pallbearers will be Joshua Billeaudeaux and Gavin Ash.
