A Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond "Ray" Cecil Couvillion will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2017, in the Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church with a Rosary being prayed at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Monsignor Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington, LA.
Mr. Couvillion, age 92, a resident of Opelousas, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at his residence.
In 1947, Ray became the pitcher for the New Iberia Pelicans baseball team. His proudest moments were remembering crowds from his hometown of Melville attending the games. After his baseball career, Ray retired from the U.S. Post Office in Scott, LA as Postmaster after 25 years of service. He lived in Melville most of his life until he married and then moved to Opelousas. Ray enjoyed traveling, watching baseball, reading his newspaper and watching the news. He also was a proud member of the Elks Lodge in Opelousas.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dolores Soileau Couvillion of Opelousas, LA; his daughter, Angela B. Chastant and husband, Paul, of Richardson, TX; his grandchild, Caroline Chastant of Richardson, TX and two step-grandchildren, Mallory Rodrigue and Paul Chastant, III.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alberta Sutton Couvillion; his sister, Ollie Ferina and his brothers, "Bea" Albert, Hansel, Kermit and Stanley Couvillion.
