Opelousas - Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 3, 2008, at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas, for Percy Anthony Thibodeaux, 82, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 1:54 a.m., surrounded by his family, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, following a brief illness. Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Angelo Cremaldi, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services, assisted by Deacon Sammy Diesi and Deacon Jerome Collins. Giftbearers will be Allison Thibodeaux and Rachel Bradford. Lectors will be Alisha Cortez Higgins and Katie Thibodeaux. The Eulogist will be Burke Soileau. Nichole Hrachovy Hatten, soloist, accompanied by Deborah Bertinot, organist, will sing Be Not Afraid, Here I Am Lord, Amazing Grace and Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Born on January 20, 1926, to Thomas and Alice Richard Thibodeaux, Percy Anthony Thibodeaux was the twelfth of thirteen children. He was a native of Church Point and a resident of Opelousas for most of his life. He served in the United States Navy for 3 years and was a veteran of World War II. Upon returning from active duty, he worked for the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service for 9 years. He then was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired after 33 years. He was also a Deputy Marshall at the City Court of Opelousas for 15 years. He was a faithful parishioner and an usher of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. A devout Catholic, Percy was an adorer of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration since its inception at Our Lady Queen of Angels. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as a rosary group that prayed the rosary together weekly. He was also a member of Les Amis Acadiens and volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Velma Soileau Thibodeaux; two daughters, Jo Ann Thibodeaux Cortez and her husband Glenn, of Opelousas, and Peggy Thibodeaux Bradford, of Dallas, TX; three sons, Timothy Thibodeaux, of Opelousas, Gary Thibodeaux and his wife Missy, of Opelousas, and Barney Thibodeaux and his fianc Sandy Horowitz, of Dallas TX; eight grandchildren, David Cortez and his wife Elisabeth, Chad Cortez and his wife Tonya, Alisha Cortez Higgins and her husband Scott, Nicholas Thibodeaux, Katie Thibodeaux, Allison Thibodeaux, Ryan Bradford, Rachel Bradford; one great grandchild, Bella Cortez; and three brothers, Robert Thibodeaux, of Church Point, Alden Thibodeaux, of Church Point, and Jack Gervais Thibodeaux and his wife Nettie, of Church Point.
