Najah Nassif

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, for Najah Michael Nassif who passed away peacefully at his home on October 18, 2007. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m., followed by recitation of the rosary at 10 and a mass at 11 officiated by Fr. James Nguyen, all conducted at St. Thomas Chapel in Palmetto, where he resided for 85 years. Born on January 27, 1922, Najah was preceded in death by his parents Habib and Kerjie Nassif, and his loving guardian Katoon Nassif. He is survived by his devoted wife Sara with whom he recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. He will be missed greatly by his three children and their families; Kergy Smith and husband Richard, Michael Nassif, Sr., and wife Sue, and Mark Nassif. He was the proud grandfather of 5; Amy Smith, Eric Smith and wife Natalie, Nicholas Smith, Michael Nassif, Jr. and wife Jamie, and Jason Najah Nassif. Three great-grand children, Adeline and Clarissa Nassif and Cody Ellis Smith brought him great pleasure and immeasurable pride.

Najah was also preceded in death by his sister Melvina Gueringer, and three brothers, Norman, Alcide, and George. Their families will miss their Uncle Buddy, who was the last surviving sibling of this close-knit family.

Najah served in WWII as a gunnery sergeant in the U. S. Air Force, was an accomplished carpenter by trade, retiring from Local 1098. He was an avid, expert sportsman, serving as a mentor for countless fellow hunters and fishermen. He was never inactive, remaining a sports fan and gardener until his death.
