Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Merilynn McKinney Quirk at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, La. Reverend James Brady will celebrate the Mass. Rite of committal will be held in the St. Landry Catholic Church Mausoleum.
Mrs. Quirk, age 91, a resident of Washington, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at Opelousas General Health System.
Merilynn was a housewife and caregiver. During her lifetime she worked in sales at KSLO and at Mornhinveg Castille Jewelers. She also was a proofreader at the Daily World Newspaper and a substitute teacher. Later in her life she enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and caring for the wild birds in her yard. She greatly enjoyed being with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors are her daughters Judith A. Quirk of Washington, La. Mary E. Quirk Bill Steinberg of Altadena, California Charlotte Quirk Courvelle Lambert Courvelle of Washington, La. and Cathy Quirk of Washington, La. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sarah Steinberg of Brooklyn, New York Hannah Steinberg of San Francisco, California Cody Bordelon and Scott Bordelon of Washington, La. and Jacob Bordelon of Lafayette, La.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Atwood Quirk her parents, Ernest and Ena McKinney her sister, Bertha M. Sis Martin her brother, Ernest Thurston Ernie McKinney her nephew, Steven McKinney and her nieces, Elizabeth Martin Puckett and Marise A. Martin.
Visiting will begin at the LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Friday, February 14, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until service time. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Reverend James Brady for his spiritual guidance and support. In addition, a special thanks to Dr. Richard Tate, who was her longtime physician, and his staff. Also, thank you to Sherril Lee and Charita Thomas with Central Louisiana Home Health for their care and friendship during her illness.
