Washington- Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington for Mercedes Frances Nicholson DeJean, known to her many friends as Junie and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as La La.

Interment will be the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington and the Rev. Albert Nunez will conduct the services.

Mrs. DeJean age 87, died at Opelousas General Health System on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 12:20AM. Junie was born August 16, 1920 in Washington.

Junie was born in Washington, Louisiana. She married her college sweetheart, Felix A. DeJean Jr. and together they had eight children. She graduated from LSU School of Music. She taught school for many years until her retirement from Opelousas High School. Junie dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her unique personality never met a stranger and she embraced everyone she met as a part of lifes beautiful journey. All who met her walked away feeling that they had made a special connection. She always found out who you were by laying her hand on your shoulder and asking, Now, how do I know you And Who are your people

Junie leaves behind her dear friends that she adored with whom she enjoyed spending time. She always made time for her civic clubs and was a member of The Womens Service League and The Pilot Club. There was a special place in her heart for The Opelousas Area Cerebral Palsy Clinic which her father helped build.

She was the daughter of the late Gantt Nicholson Sr. and Sarah Muller Nicholson.

She is survived by her five sons; Felix A. DeJean III Grem and his wife Carolyne, Dr. Gantt Nicholson DeJean Nicky and his wife Freida, Thomas Joseph DeJean Tommy and his wife Cindy all of Opelousas, John Blair DeJean Blair and his wife Patty of Ventura CA. and Dr. Gregory Owen DeJean Greg of New York City, NY, two daughters; Rhonda DeJean Brown and her husband Gary of New York City, NY and Jeanne DeJean Hagan Sister Baby and her husband Ken of Pensacola FL. and a daughter-in-law; Mrs. Jeanne V. DeJean , a brother; Robert Nicholson Bobby of Opelousas. La La was a special grandmother to; Julie DeJean Casanova, Lauren DeJean Mouret, Felix A. DeJean IV Andy, Kathryn DeJean Howard, Jennifer DeJean Pressler, Aimee DeJean Romero, Gantt DeJean, Seth DeJean, Olivia DeJean, Darr DeJean II, Blaire Brown, Taylor Brown, Leslie DeJean Rubin, Emilie Hagan Howard, Kelsey Hagan and Silas DeJean and to her 16 great-grandchildren; Carolyne, Katelyn, Lindsey and Laura Casanova, Scotty, Elizabeth, Nicholas and Kathryn Camille Mouret, Felix A. DeJean V, Quint, William and Jackson DeJean, Allyson, Meredyth, Walker and Hillary Howard and Robert Pressler. Her newest great-grandchild will arrive on the day of her burial.

She was preceded in death by her husband Felix A. DeJean Jr, her son; Gerald Darr DeJean , Darr,her parents; Gantt Nicholson Sr. and Sarah Muller Nicholson of Washington. She was also preceded by her brothers; Gantt Nicholson Jr. and James Nicholson Jimmy and sisters; Miriam Lyman Sister, Marguerite Scoggins Weet and Muriel Morrison Sugar. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons; Felix A. DeJean IV Andy, Gantt DeJean, Darr DeJean II, Seth DeJean, Taylor Brown and Silas DeJean.

The family requests that donations be made to; The Opelousas Cerebral Palsy Clinic, 841 East Bellevue Street,Opelousas La 70570

Visitation will be held from 5:00PM to 9:00PM on Friday and will continue on Saturday from 8:00AM until the time of service. A Rosary will be recited on Friday at 7;00PM.
