Mary Hutchins, age 96, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that touched countless lives.

Born in 1928, Mary's long life was characterized by her unwavering devotion to her family and her faith. As a loving mother to her four children, she took immense pride in their accomplishments and supported them through life's many challenges. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children and grandchildren, whose visits would light up her face with a radiant smile. She never missed an opportunity to shower them with affection, wisdom, and quite often, her famous “egg bread.”

A woman of profound faith, Mary was an active member of her church community throughout her life, including serving alongside her husband as they pastored churches in South Carolina and Louisiana. Her involvement in various ministries over the years reflected her commitment to putting her beliefs into action. Whether worshipping in church, living out the gift of hospitality, or spending time in personal devotion, Mary approached each day with dedication and compassion.

When not visiting with others, Mary could often be found tending to her beloved garden. Her green thumb was legendary among neighbors and friends. Blackberries, oranges, beautiful flowers and an assortment of vegetables were readily shared with friends and family. The beauty she cultivated outside was matched only by the warmth she created inside her home, where a delicious meal was always ready for anyone in need of nourishment for body and soul.

Later in life, Mary developed a passion for genealogy, mastering computer research, discovering fascinating family legends, and providing a detailed family tree for friends, family, and acquaintances.

Mary's life was a testament to the power of giving selflessly and loving unconditionally. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by her presence.

She is survived by her son, Vernon Dwain Hutchins of Carencro, La.; Linda Gayle Lafleur of Lawtell, La., Cynthia Marie Lewis (Jonathan) of Carencro, La. and Angela Joy Dupre (Barton) of Sunset, La. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of other beloved family members.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Vernon Hutchins; her parents, Charlie and Jacintha Cushman; her brothers, James Cushman, Luther Cushman and Charles “Buster” Cushman; her sisters, Oner Grace Tatman and Lucille Campbell; one great-grandchild and her son-in-law, Michael Lafleur.
