Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 for Ms. Mary "Gerry" Geraldine Richard Brown at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Monsignor Jeff Deblanc, Father Greg Semien, and Father Austin Leger will concelebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and Burial will follow at St. Landry Cemetery.
Ms. Gerry Brown, age 89 and a resident of Opelousas passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Lafayette General Medical Center.
Her passion was cooking and baking a variety of dishes, including cookies, tea cakes, sweet dough pies, chocolate syrup with homemade bread, and homemade cakes. She also enjoyed picking blackberries and figs to can and preserve for her family and had the pleasure of giving them as gifts. She was a caregiver to many and she loved to dance. She also spent much time outside watching her cattle. Gerry was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She faithfully watched EWTN and prayed the Rosary with her daughters, Judy and Louise. Gerry was a member of the Catholic Daughters Rosary Group, the Altar Society and she was also a Eucharistic Minister, where she enjoyed bringing communion to the elderly. She was also a member of the LA Cattlemen's Association. Gerry cherished spending time with her family, her children and her grandchildren. Her heart was blessed for the holidays, especially at her annual Thanksgiving Day gathering at her home. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her and she never met a stranger.
She is survived by her sons, Charles V. Brown and companion, Joyce Ducote of Livonia, Donald J. Brown and wife, Rose Mary of Opelousas, Gary Brown and partner, Kenneth Melancon of Youngsville, Joseph Curtis "Curt" Brown, Jr. and wife, Bonita of Opelousas, Glenn G. Brown and wife, Karen of Carencro, and Kenneth J. Brown and wife, Andrea of Southside, Alabama; daughters, Judith "Judy" Brown of Opelousas, Carolyn Daigle and husband Grady of Greenwell Springs, Jackie Thibodeaux and husband, Kenneth of Opelousas, Diane Lalonde and husband, Leroy of Opelousas, Emma Louise Brown of Opelousas, and Mary Tomlinson and husband, Allen of Opelousas; sister, Florence "Flo" Duplechin of Gonzales; sisters-in-law, Lois Brown Olivier of Opelousas, Elsie Venable of Opelousas, Pat Richard of Jonesborro and Marie Richard of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Tammy Wimberly, Lisa Marks, Jerrod Brown, Holly Bertrand, Terry "T.J." Brown, Trista Bourgeois, Megan Miller, Chassidy Bruce, Dillion Brown, Holly Thibodeaux, Morgan Brown, Riley Brown, Kodi Brown, Jackson Brown, Emily Brown, Melanie Godso, Cherie Jarreau, Scott Theriot, Shane Theriot, Sheila Ortego, April Lalonde, Tonya Chenier, Corey Lalonde, Casie Fontenot, Trey Quirk and Tyler Quirk; 52 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great- grandchildren; and her special friend and caretaker for the family, Doris Ann Collins.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Curtis Brown, Sr.; parents, Gustave Arville Richard, Sr. and Rose Broussard Richard; sons, Terry J. Brown and Hobson Anthony "Tony" Brown; grandchildren, James Todd Daigle, Charles V. Brown, Jr. and Michael Thad Brown; brothers, Noah Richard, Gustave "Shorty" Richard, Jr., Joseph "Joe" Richard, Sr., Frank Richard and Hilman Richard; sisters, Irene Broussard, Lelia Thibodeaux and Etheleen "Tilly" Flores.
Visitation will be held at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. and will continue all night until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Evening. The Catholic Daughters will have a service at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be her sons, Charles V. Brown, Donald J. Brown, Gary Brown, Joseph "Curt" C. Brown, Glenn G. Brown and Kenneth J. Brown.
