Martha Richard

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. for Martha Dupuis Richard, 97. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Leonville. The Reverend Ken Domingue will celebrate the Mass. Interment will follow in the St. Leo Mausoleum.

Mrs. Martha was born in Leonville, LA, graduated from Opelousas High School, and was a resident of Little Teche. She died March 26, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, LA. Mrs. Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. Mrs. Martha loved to be in her yard working in her flowerbeds, cooking, dining out, and sewing for her family. She especially loved to read books and pray the rosary daily. She was very knowledgeable in politics and current events. Huey P. Long was one of her favorite subjects to discuss. Mrs. Martha was still very active walking and traveling. She resided with her daughter for three years and still lived a full life. She will be dearly missed and was an inspiration to all.

Survivors include her six children, sons, J.D. Sonny Richard, Jr. and wife Evelyn of Carencro Randy Richard of Opelousas four daughters, Barbara Richard Scruggins and husband Robert of Opelousas Cheryl Richard Schneider and husband Kurt of Opelousas Marie L. Richard Vauquelin and husband Wayne of Houma and Darlene Richard Wheaton and husband Pat of Leonville. Mrs. Martha has twelve grandchil dren, Gregory Richard, Jason Richard, Crystal Richard Barzare, Angela Scruggins Hebert, Chad Scruggins, Mark Schneider, Erin Schneider Schnyder, David Vauquelin, Celeste Richard, Sarah Richard, Devin Wheaton, and Adrienne Wheaton. Mrs. Martha has eighteen greatgrandchildren. Mitchell Hebert, Megan Hebert, Jonathan Hebert, Jordan Hebert, Ashley Hebert, Theresa Hebert, Lauren Hebert, Stephen Hebert, Hannah Hebert, Emily Hebert, Sofia Hebert, Chloe Hebert, Isabella Hebert, Kristen Scruggins, Emma Scruggins, James Paul Scruggins, Kevin Schnyder, and Laila Schnyder.

Mrs. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of forty years J.D. Richard, Sr. Doris, her parents Adolph and Orpha Moreau Dupuis seven siblings Adolph Dupuis Jr., Ralph Dupuis, Clayton Dupuis, Martin Dupuis, Lorena Dupuis Huval, Odile Dupuis Broussard, and Herman Dupuis two infant children Jerry Joseph Richard and Beryl Marie Richard. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Marthas six grandsons.

Visiting hours will be observed at LafondArdoin Funeral Home in Opelousas on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, from 5:00 P.M. 9:00 P.M. and the funeral home will reopen at 8:00 A.M. on Thursday until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening by Lee Hargroder.
