Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for John Elvin Medlin, Sr., age 67, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, in the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Reverend Gregory Simien will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will take place at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery. Gift bearers will be his daughters, Cristina Doiron and Dana Dupre and Nikki Mae will assist with the Liturgy of the Word.
Mr. Medlin, a resident of Opelousas, LA, died on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Opelousas General Health System.
John served his country proudly in the United States Army National Guard. He was a Supervisor with the Louisiana State Police where he was awarded the "Louisiana State Police Life Saving Award". Lt. Medlin was originally assigned to Troop K in 1974 and served as Public Information Officer. He was transferred to Troop I in 1988 after Troop K closed. Lt. Medlin retired in April of 2004 with a total of 29 1/2 years of service. He also worked for the United States Marshal Service and the St. Landry Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Louisiana State Troopers Organization and the American Legion Post 0129.
John enjoyed gunsmithing, hunting, fishing and camping. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Leanna Daigle Medlin; his mother, Hilda Johnson Manuel; his son, John Medlin, Jr. and companion, Crystal Arceneaux; his daughters, Cristina Medlin Doiron and husband, Troy; Dana Medlin Dupre and husband, Louis and his 6 grandchildren, Cori Lynn Medlin, Tyler Joseph Medlin, Gabriel Singleton, Nick Schneider, Trevor Dupre, Timothy Dupre and his beloved pet, his dog Mojo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elvin Joseph Medlin; his brothers, Samuel "Sammy" Medlin, Matthew "Mark" Medlin; his paternal grandparents, Joseph "Pete" Medlin and Hazel Medlin and his maternal grandparents, Windy and Agnes Johnson.
Pallbearers will be his "brothers" from the Louisiana State Police.
Visitation will be held at the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Monday, February 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. A rosary will be prayed on Monday at 6:30p.m. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday until time of services.
