Funeral services will be held for LaVerne Canterbury Ray on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Skip Montet Chapel at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas with visitation beginning at 12:00 PM until time of services at 2:00 PM. Reverend Perry Hubbs will conduct the funeral service. Burial will be held in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.
LaVerne, age 90, a resident of Opelousas, LA, went to meet her Lord on Thursday, November 1, 2018.
She was a devout Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of Opelousas for 63 years and taught Sunday school for 40 years. She loved cooking, reading, camping, fishing and most of all, spending time with her family. LaVerne was an amazing mom and wife and will be remembered as a kind and strong woman.
She is survived by her sons, Robert L. Ray and wife, Linda Yancey Ray, of Baton Rouge, LA and Brad Ray and wife, Monika Poche Ray, of Ponchatoula, LA; and daughter, Sherry Ray Sandoz and husband, Lawrence "Larry" B. Sandoz, III, of Opelousas, LA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael Jordan Ray of Baton Rouge, LA, Carolyn Elizabeth Ray of Baton Rouge, LA, Emily Ann Ray of Ponchatoula, LA, Benjamin Andrew Ray of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Courtney Sandoz Copell and husband, Lance Copell of Opelousas, LA, Robert "Robi" Sandoz and wife, Micki Sebastien Sandoz of Youngsville, LA and Stephen Sandoz and wife, Jessica Robertson Sandoz of Opelousas, LA; and five great-grandchildren, Leighton Copell, Avery Copell, Kaleb Sandoz, Emma Kate Sandoz and Maddie Sandoz.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Robert Reginald Ray; her parents, John Robert Canterbury and Eunice Holmes Canterbury; her brothers and sisters, Emery Canterbury, Vera Mae "Bea" Canterbury Whitman, Della Marteal Canterbury, Leona Canterbury Patterson and Richard "Buck" Canterbury.
Pallbearers will be Robert "Robi" Sandoz, Stephen Sandoz, Lance Copell, Michael Ray, Benjamin "Ben" Ray and Lawrence "Larry" Sandoz.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. of Opelousas for their amazing care during her time of need.
