A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Landry Catholic Church, concelebrated by Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Romero and Reverend Monsignor Keith J. DeRouen. Interment will be in the Bellevue Memorial Cemetery in Opelousas, La.
Juliette Ann Lafond Kaufman died peacefully at home in Opelousas on Friday, January 22, 2010.
She was born in Opelousas on December 13, 1913. Juliette was a graduate of Charity Hospital School of Nursing and also Charity School of Anesthesiology in New Orleans. She worked at St. Vincents Hospital in Norfolk, VA for a year and was the house anesthetist for Charity Hospital from 1934 to 1937. She was married in the St. Landry Catholic Church to Dr. Henry J. Kaufman, Jr. in 1937 and was a resident of Cottonport, La. for seventythree years. In their early years in Cottonport, she assisted with anesthesia in the parish hospitals and assisted Dr. Kaufman on house calls, including obstetric calls in the countryside.
She was a Charter member of St. Marys Assumption Church Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and Padre Pio Court 2141 in Cottonport. She served as president of the PTA at St. Marys School and president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Charity Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and St. Marys and St. Landry Catholic Churches.
In 1962, she received the insignia of the Holy Cross, entitled, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal from Pope John Paul XXIII, for exceptional service to the Catholic Church. Juliettes devotion to her faith, family, and friends remains an inspiration to all who knew her.
Mrs. Kaufman is survived by her devoted sister, Aline E. Lafond of Opelousas and beloved son, Dr. Henry J. Kaufman, III, and his wife, Charlotte, of Baton Rouge four grandchildren: Dr. Henry J. Kaufman, IV and his wife, Kelli, of Lafayette Elizabeth and her husband, Dr. John Hildenbrand, IV of Carmel, Indiana Courtenay, and her husband, John J. Mendell of Lafayette and William Kaufman of Baton Rouge and eight greatgrandchildren: Katherine and Joseph Kaufman, Christian, Grayson, and Alexander Hildenbrand, and Jay, Mamie and Corinne Mendell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry J. Kaufman, Jr. her parents, Joseph Lafond and Marie Louise Titard, and siblings, Achille Lafond, Didier Lafond, and Celeste Lafond Sister Mary Joseph Lafond, D.C..
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2010 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the LafondArdoin Funeral Home in Opelousas and will reopen on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be recited on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
Pallbearers are: Dr. Henry Kaufman, IV, William H.L. Kaufman, Henry George Reed, Jack Saux, Leroy Thomas, David Kaufman and Guy Duffy Kaufman, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are: John Joseph Mendell, Jr., Dr. John C. Hildenbrand, IV and Paul Boagni, Jr.
The family would like to thank their angels, Sarah Williams, Patsy Pitre, Patsy Thomas, Helen Williams, Regina Huntsberry, Willie Mae Williams, Leroy and Lucille Thomas and Heart of Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to ones chosen charity or the St. Landry Catholic Church.
