Jules Fontenot

A Celebration of Life Mass for Jules C. Fontenot (Popo) will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA on Monday, July 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. Monsignor Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will take place at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jules was born on May 13, 1929 in Ville Platte, Louisiana and died on July 11, 2016 in Conroe, Texas. Jules lived in Ventress, Louisiana for forty years and retired after thirty-five years of employment with Texaco, Inc.

Jules was past Commander of Hunter Fabre American Legion Post 248, past President of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation and wrote "Outdoors Unlimited" column for the Opelousas Daily World and New Roads Pointe Coupee Banner for seventeen years. He was a sixty-year member of Humble Cottage Masonic Lodge-Royal Arch. Jules was a proud veteran and had served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S. Alshaine.

He is survived by his daughter, Riki Dewey of Conroe, Texas; grandchildren, Laurie Marek (Chad), Aimee Witherspoon, Michael Dewey (Jillian); great-grandchildren Elise Marek, Noelle Marek, William Witherspoon, Abigail Witherspoon, Brynn Dewey and Zoe Dewey. Also survived by his sisters Ramona Prejean and Maxine Huxkill; sisters-in-law, Jackie Hargroder (Johnny), Gerry Devillier, Patricia Devillier, Deanne Fontenot and Verna Fontenot; brothers-in-law, Louis Devillier (Wendy) and Larry Devillier. "Uncle Jay" was beloved by a host of nieces and nephews.

Jules was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Fay Devillier Fontent, his parents Clarence Fontenot and Iris McDaniel, son-in- law Patrick Dewey; brothers, Caroline Fontenot and Perry Fontenot; sisters-in-law Lois Devillier Bellard, Vera Devillier Broussard, Fern Devillier, Marie Devillier; brothers-in-law Joseph Devillier, Clayton Devillier, Vernon Devillier, Dr. A. C. Broussard and Ronald Bellard.

Pall Bearers will be Michael Dewey, Chad Marek, Louis Devillier, Jim Thomassee, Chris Devillier and Cory Devillier. Honorary pallbearers will be William Witherspoon, Larry Devillier, Johnny Hargroder and Scott Devillier.

Visitation will be held at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Opelousas, Louisiana on Sunday, July 17, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 6:00 p.m. The funeral home will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Monday with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m.
