Melville - Funeral services will be held for Joseph "Mann" Viola, age 89, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015, in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home in Melville, LA. Burial will follow at the St. John the Evangelist Church Cemetery in Melville. Reverend James Nguyen will conduct the funeral service.
Joseph, a resident of Melville, LA, died on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at his residence. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Joseph served his country proudly in the United States Army. He served during WWII where he was a medical aid man and a sharp shooter. After returning home after the war, he worked as a farmer, bailed his own hay and took care of his cattle which were his life. He was a retired ferry boat captain in Melville and in his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his brother, Charles Viola, of Krotz Springs, LA; eight grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Stella Reeves Viola; his parents, Virginia Clark and Anthony Viola, Sr.; his daughters, Nora Jean Angona, Ruby Katherine Mitchell; his brothers, Johnny Viola, Nicholas Viola, James Viola, Anthony Viola, Jr.; his sisters, Francis Viola Chutz, Lucille Viola Coburn and his three nephews, Deon Viola, William Colbert and Danny Chutz.
Visitation will be held at the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Melville on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. (open all night) until time of service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
