Opelousas- Funeral service for Joseph Joe Myers, age 97, will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2008 in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00a.m.
Joseph L. Joe Myers was born on March 26, 1911 to Thomas Levi Myers and Alda Lambert Myers in Opelousas. He has been a resident of Opelousas since that time. Joseph T. St. Cyr and Lovenia Bordelon St. Cyr raised him from birth.
He began to work at the age of 12. As a young man during the height of the Great Depression he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for a period of three years. Along with his childhood friend Glenn Kessinger they worked in the pine forests around Olla, Louisiana. He later drove trucks for the H.K. Elder lumber company. During the 1930s when the Huey Long administration began to extensively build highways in Louisiana he went to work for T.L. James.
Just before the start of World War II he took a job with the Vermilion Wholesale Company in Opelousas working for the Swartzenburg brothers, Ellis, Vernon and Eldridge. In 1942 Mr. Myers than began his career job with the City of Opelousas as an oiler at the city electric power plant. He eventually rose to the position of operator and retired in 1976 with 34 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mildred Darby Myers and five children: daughters Myrna Myers French, Grace Myers Sloane and husband Roger Sloane of Opelousas and Jo Ann Myers Dungan and husband Jeff Dungan of Denham Springs and sons William L. Billy Myers of Milton and Kenneth L. Myers of Port Barre.
Nine grandchildren also survive him: Samuel A. French, Rachel Myers Graham, William B. Brig Myers, Noah Learned, Micah Learned, Annie Molly Dupre, Jill Dupre, Trent Myers, and Chad Myers; and thirteen great-grandchildren, Hillary French, Solomon French, Kegan D. Myers, Lunden Graham, Zoe Graham, Willow Cook, Sydney Myers, Lalah Myers, Eric Myers, Molly Frances Bracewell, Camille Claire Bracewell, Tripp James Worthington, and Landry Claire Worthington.
One sister, Rose Mary Myers survives him.
Brothers preceded him in death are Thomas Levi Myers, Jr., Frederick Ted Myers, Alvin Bubba Myers and Robert Bobby Myers. Sisters: Maude Myers Roberts, Mae Myers, Iris Myers Powers, Louise Myers Rills, Eleanor Myers and Miriam Myers. Two sons, Joseph L. Myers, Jr. and Dirk Stephens Myers, also precede him in death.
Pallbearers will be Noah Learned, Michah Learned, Sam French, Jeff Dungan, Chad Myers, Trent Myers, and Roger Sloane. Honorary pallbearers will be Brigham Myers, Billy Myers, Kenneth Myers, Charlie Kessinger, and Jimmy Prados.
Visiting hours will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, March 7 and from 9 a.m. until memorial service at 12 a.m. on March 8 at Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home.
