James Bienvenu

Funeral services for James Rogers Bienvenu will be held Thursday at 11:00am at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. The interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park. Fr. Angelo Cremaldi, Monsignor Louis Melancon and Deacon Sammy Diesi will conduct the services.

Mr. Bienvenu, age 71 a resident of Opelousas died Tuesday February 24, 2009 at 8:10am at Doctors Hospital in Opelousas.

Jimmy attended Opelousas Elementary School and graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee, where he attained the rank of Captain in Company D Commander, he attended Springhill College in Mobile, AL., the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette and also Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans. He was appointed City Clerk and Tax Collector for the city of Opelousas in 1970 until his retirement in 1987, owner of several businesses including Bienvenu Real Estate, 5 HR Block Income Tax franchises and co-owner of Communications Center of Opelousas. He was elected to serve on the Democratic Executive Committee for 2 terms, elected President of the Louisiana Municipal Clerks Association and was Ex-Officio Member of the Board of Directors of Louisiana Municipal Association. He was appointed to several committee chairs of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. He was a member of several communities and civic organizations including the St. Landry Parish Community Action Agency where he served as vice-chairman. He was also the District Vice Chairman of Evangeline Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, Past President of Parents Against Drug Dealers, Board of Advisors of Doctors Hospital from 1985 to 1986, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital from 1987 to 2009 when he was designated as Chairman Emeritus, St. Landry Parish Economic Industrial Development District, Board of Advisors of Womens Imaging Center in Lafayette and a member of the Board of Trustees of Teche Federal Bank. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church and also a member of Knights of Columbus Council 11270 and Past Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministers of Doctors Hospital of Opelousas.

Jimmys hobbies include playing bouree, attending college sporting events, watching college and professional football and baseball games on the television and he loved studying and reading the Bible and was a regular Chapel attendant.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years; Jeanne Francois Bienvenu of Opelousas, daughter; Alyce Bienvenu Landry and her husband Mackie of Prairieville, stepdaughters; Cherie DeSterre Werner and husband Jon of Austin, TX. and Francois Bienvenu and husband, Robert Hutch Hudgins, of Las Vegas, Nevada, 4 step-grandchildren; Caryn, Courtney and Cayley Werner and Daniel Toney.

Preceded in death by his parents; Dr. Lionel Joseph Bienvenu, Jr. and Carrie Gillis Rogers Bienvenu Pavy, brothers; Charles Bienvenu and Lionel Joseph Bienvenu, III and a sister; Gillis Anne Bienvenu Lockett.

Visitation will be held Wednesday February 25, 2009 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and on Thursday from 8:00am until time of services. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday at 7:00pm. Memorial donations can be made to Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 2125 S. Union St., Opelousas, LA, 70570 for the Blessed Virgin Mary Mosaic.
