J. Fontenot

J. Warren Fontenot, age 96, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2017. Warren was born on November 6, 1921 in Opelousas, Louisiana to Alvin Fontenot and Lola Pitre Fontenot and was a 1939 graduate of Opelousas High School. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corp. At the age of 9 years, he was a newspaper boy at the Opelousas Daily World and in his early life he worked at Western Union, Leo LaFleur's Buick Dealership and Mack & Evinrude Outboard Motor Dealership. After a long career at General Adjustment Bureau, he retired and was owner/operator of the Opelousas Pearl Beer Distributorship. In 1978, he started his own business, Warren Salvage Company, and was very proud to work alongside his son, David, in this business.

Warren married O'Dess Carnett in 1942. They had four children together and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before her death in 2002. Warren was very involved in his community. He was a member and held leadership positions in many local organizations, including the Elks Club, the Lions Club (President), the Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight & 4th Degree Knight), the Yambilee Festival (Grand Marshall) and was a lifetime volunteer member of the Opelousas Hook & Ladder Fire Company (Assistant Chief). He loved to dance, especially to the Big Band sounds, host the annual Rabbit Hunt, help friends and neighbors, give yearly gifts of Opelousas Sweet Potatoes and dote on his grandchildren. He lived, worked and gathered friends in Opelousas, Natchitoches, Beaumont, Houston, Austin and Garland.

He is survived by his children, Derla Ann Lee, Jim Fontenot and wife, Charlotte, Lola Long and husband, Mick, and David Fontenot; grandchildren Mike Lee and wife, Joy, Liz Crouse and husband, Jerry, Nancy Lee, Chris Lee and wife, Kim, Erin Leake and husband, Blair, Michael Long, Meg Fontenot and Sophie Fontenot. Warren is also survived by nine great grandchildren, three great, great grandchildren and his sister Marguerite Fontenot Miller. His wife, O'Dess, his parents, Alvin and Lola, his brother Alvin Earl Fontenot, his sisters Audrey Fontenot Richard and Patsy Fontenot Cain and his great grandchild, Kyle Donovan McBride, precede him in death.

Visitation and Rosary will be held at LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home, 2845 South Union Street, Opelousas, LA on Sunday, November 26, 5:00-7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Monday, November 27th at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 2125 South Union Street, with the burial following at Bellevue Memorial Park, Opelousas.

Memorial contributions may be made to M.D. Anderson, The Salvation Army and St. Jude's Hospital for Children.
