Herman Dale Hebert, age 75, passed away Sunday morning, March 28, 2021, at his residence in Opelousas.
Dale was a comedic, fun-loving soul born in Opelousas, LA on July 26, 1945. From the age of 12, he worked with his father at Hebert’s Service Station. Unknown to him at the time, several years later, he would be the man to take it over. In 1972, when his father passed, Dale took over the station, and what a great job he did. If you lived in or did business in Opelousas in the last 4 decades, you’ve either passed or stopped by Hebert’s Service Station. My Grandpa loved that service station more than almost anything. The only thing I know he loved more was family, friends, and the customers that never left his side. I can remember around the time he finally closed the station; it was said that the city of Opelousas suffered a loss. On March 28, 2021, Opelousas suffered a bigger loss than anyone expected when he passed away. My Grandfather was a great husband to my Grandmother for 41 years. They were truly blessed to find each other. He was an awesome grandfather who taught me a lot when I was younger. He taught me it was the simple things in life that matter, like coming home from work, feeling the fulfillment of the day and relaxing with the ones you love. He loved traveling, and my grandparents took me on a lot of trips when I was young, opening my eyes to a world outside of Opelousas, LA. I never knew my grandpa to miss a day of work unless it was serious. He got up every morning to go to that station, but he never got up to go to work. He had a love for customer service that you may never find if you search the rest of your life. Herman Dale Hebert left his mark in the hearts of everyone he came across, and he forever left his mark in mine. I know he is in a better place, and able to see Maw Maw again, I know she was waiting at the gate for you. I love you Paw Paw, and I hope I can make you as proud as you’ve made me.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman H. Hebert of Opelousas, LA, and Philoman Labbe’ Hebert of Lewisburg, LA, and his wife of 41 years, Flossie Dugas Hebert of Arnaudville.
He is survived by his sisters, Jewel Hebert Pitre of Montgomery, TX and Shirley Hebert Lukenbill of Cedar Park, TX, their sons Andrew Scott Pitre of The Woodlands, TX and James Frederick Lukenbill of Cedar Park, TX and daughter Annette Murell and her husband, Tommy, of Opelousas, LA., his son Dale Michael Hargroder, and wife Joyce of Opelousas, LA, and grandson David Hargroder of Opelousas, LA. Survivors also include other grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as great- nieces and great-nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone who supported Dale over the years and the family and friends who watched over him after Flossie’s passing, it meant a great deal. Also, a huge thanks to all friends and family that have wished condolences and said prayers. The remaining family wishes to thank everyone that ever came in contact with him, and we extend our sympathies and prayers to all of you as well.
