Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Girlie Duplechin Fontenot at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Monsignor Keith DeRouen will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will take place at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.
Girlie Fontenot, age 91, a resident of Opelousas, Louisiana, died peacefully, on Monday, September 12, 2016, at her home surrounded by loved ones.
Girlie was a woman of strength and conviction. She dedicated her life to faith and family. She cared deeply for those around her and offered her daily prayers for their greater good. Her days began and ended in prayer and in between she busied herself with the daily routines of being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Hers was a life of service. She was a founding member of the Opelousas Rosary Group, which met weekly until the time of her illness. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters, Court #119, and was honored by them for fifty years of service. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her four daughters, Sherry Hidalgo and husband, Richard, of Opelousas, Louisiana; Laura Noel and husband, Ellis, of Opelousas, Louisiana; Dianne Dempsey-Legnon and husband, Michael, of Lafayette, Louisiana; Peggy Fontenot of Bayou Chicot, Louisiana; her two sons, Wayne Fontenot and Laura Davis of Katy, Texas; Kim Fontenot and fiancé, Patricia Boulet, of Lafayette, Louisiana; and her sister, Vernice Gautreaux. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 73 years, Willis A. Fontenot; her parents, Veillor and Alida Duplechin; her brothers, Thomas Duplechin, Vernon Duplechin, and Ernest Duplechin; her sisters, Leonie Gould Lalonde and Mary Johnson, and her son-in-law, James Wiley Dempsey.
Visitation will be held at the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A rosary will be prayed by Deacon Sammy Diesi 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The funeral home will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday until time of service.
Pallbearers will be David Hidalgo, Lance Hidalgo, Blake Noel, Spencer Noel, Brady Noel, Adam Fontenot and Joshua Fontenot.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Steve Dupuis and his family for their continued love and support.
The family would also like to extend a special thanks to so many who visited and supported her in these difficult days including Terry Guidry, Ellen Soileau, Sandra Mistric, the members of her rosary group and her caregivers, Beverly, Gilda, Louise, Denise, Annie and Courtney. The family would also like to thank the medical staff, especially Crystal and Rozina.
