Gilbert Sonnier

Opelousas- A Funeral Service will be held for Mr. Gilbert Joseph Sonnier, age 73, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prairie Ronde, LA. Father Austin Leger will officiate the Funeral Service. Burial will take place at Bertrand Family Cemetery in Prairie Ronde, LA.

Mr. Sonnier, a resident of Prairie Ronde, LA died on Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

Mr. Sonnier was an avid gardener who enjoyed lawn work. He also enjoyed woodworking. He loved helping his children and grand-children with any and everything. He was a supervisor with waste management and throughout his years with them he won many achievement awards. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Caroline Ruth Ganson Sonnier; his daughters, Sheila S. Babineaux and husband, Jerry, Jacqueline R. Lafleur and significant other, Jarvis Gonzales and Angela M. Pitre; his brother, Irby Sonnier and wife, Lou; his sister, Shirlene Lavergne. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Thibodeaux, Joshua Romero, Jacob Lafleur, Deborah Race, Megan Lafleur Jarryd Pitre and his 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lionez Bertrand Sonnier, his neice, Delores Lavergne and his closest childhood friend, Arva Lee "Shorty" Deville.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Romero, Jake Lafleur, Jarryd Pitre, Jerry Babineaux, Jonathan Race, Jarvis Gonzales and Irby Sonnier

Visitation will be held at the LaFond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday until time of service. A rosary will be prayed by Deacon Tom Lindsey at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
