Opelousas Funeral services for George W. Spears, age 93, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012, in the LafondArdoin Funeral Home in Opelousas, La., followed by interment in the Bellevue Memorial Park. The Reverend Paul Bienvenu will conduct the service.
Mr. Spears, a resident of Opelousas, died on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at his residence.
George served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He played in the Evangeline Baseball League and also minor league baseball for the New York Yankees. After his baseball career, he opened and operated Spears Construction. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his son, George W. Billy Spears, Jr. of Opelousas, La. his daughter, Beverly S. Brown and husband, Bob, of Broussard, La. sisters, Lucy Shea of Lake Charles, LA and Genevieve Dosher of Ragley, LA his granddaughter, Kathy Phillips Long and husband, Todd, and 2 greatgranddaughters, Meredith and Marissa Long all of Gonzales, LA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Blanche Spears parents, Fred and Emily Abshire Spears brother, Dave Spears and a sister, Ruby Martorano.
Visiting hours will be observed in the LafondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas, beginning on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m.
