George Nichols

Melville - Funeral services will be held for George Henry Nichols, age 86, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel in Melville with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. Reverend Adam Campbell will conduct the funeral service. Burial will take place at the Methodist Cemetery in Melville. Pallbearers will be Brett Nichols, Michael Nichols, Drew Duplechain and Lee Stockwell.

Mr. Nichols, a resident of Melville, LA, died on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Opelousas General Health System.

George proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Air Force as the lead crew member flying the B-52 bomber. He was a Navigator/Bombardier by training and helped to win the Cold War. Later he impacted the lives of many people through his 35 years as a math and science teacher. His generosity was legendary; he would literally give you the shirt off his back. He was affectionately known as "King George" by those who knew and loved him. George enjoyed reading about current events, fishing and hunting. He loved spending time with his family, performing and singing.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth "Rusty" Nichols, of Melville, LA; his son, Mark J. Nichols and wife, Libby, of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; daughters, Lynn Senette and her husband, Brent, of Anchorage, AK; Karen Wiltz and her husband, Bill, of Krotz Springs, LA; his brother, Marvin Nichols of Florida and his sister, Earline Garsee of Palmetto, LA. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ida Nichols; his grandson, Mark J. Nichols, II; his brother, Clabe, Hilary and David Nichols and his sisters, Ida Worth and Thelma Naquin.
