Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Genevieve D. Cortez at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, La. Reverend Father Paul Bienvenu will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will be held at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Cortez, age 84, who was a native of Opelousas, Louisiana, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 in the comfort of her home.
Genevieve lived life to its fullest as a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was a devout Catholic, parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, and a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 50 years. For the last 30 years, Genevieve worked as a secretary for Louisiana First Financial Group owned and operated by her son Glenn. From 1966 1974, Genevieve served as Mayoress of the City of Opelousas alongside her husband, Wilfred E. Cortez.
Survivors include her sons, Glenn D. Cortez, Sr. and wife, Jo Ann, of Opelousas, La. Wilfred E. Cortez, Jr. and wife, Cordie, of Slidell, La. her daughter, Marceline Cortez Hrachovy of Opelousas, La. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred E. Cortez, Sr. her parents, Alduse and Willie Mae Reed Dohmann her daughter, Darlene Cortez Hebert her brother, Alvin Dohmann and her grandsons, Jude David Cortez and Christopher Joseph C. J. Cortez.
Visitation will be held at LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Sunday, May 11, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7 p.m. The funeral home will reopen on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Stephen Andrew Hebert, Glenn David Cortez, Jr., Christopher Chad Cortez, Nicholas Troy Cortez, Ryan Matthew Cortez, and Jonathan Daniel Hrachovy and honorary pallbearers will be brothers A. J. Dohmann,, Jr. and F. Chris Dohmann.
