Earl Briggs

Opelousas A mass of Christian Burial will be held for Earl Briggs, age 94, on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, followed by interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Monsignor Robert Romero will conduct the services.

Mr. Briggs, a resident of Opelousas, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at his residence.

Earl was an electrical contractor from 1945 to 1950, the owner of Briggs Electrical Supply Company from 1950 to 1989, and he was affiliated with Teche Electric until his retirement. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3409, and he was the Fire Chief of the Hope, Hook, and Ladder Volunteer Fire Company. Mr. Briggs also worked as a meter reader and a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and cooking.

He is survived by his sons, Francis Earl Briggs, Jr., David Sandoz Briggs and wife, Helen; his daughters, Susan Dupont and husband, Mark of Aiken, South Carolina, and Patricia Ann Briggs of Opelousas, La. He is also survived by one grandchild, Amy Elise Dupont of Columbia, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Sandoz Briggs, his parents, David and Theresa Briggs; his brothers, Oren Briggs and Curtis Briggs; his half brother, S. D. Barrett; his sister, Vera Mae Briggs and half sister, Hazel Barrett Jennings.

Visiting hours will be observed in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 until time of service.

A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 2009.

The family would like to thank Hospice Care of Avoyelles and his sitters: Wilda Jones, Ellar Lavigne and Betty Esprit for their care and support during the past few months.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to either the Special Olympics of Louisiana , 1000 East Morris Avenue, Hammond, LA 70403 or the Opelousas Developmental Center, 1202 Linwood Drive, Opelousas, LA 70570.
