Dr. Frederick Lionel Mayer passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017, at Golden Age of Welsh nursing home at the age of 83. He was an orthopaedic surgeon and was a native and long-time resident of Opelousas.
Dr. Mayer was a graduate of LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1963 and completed his orthopaedic residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans in 1968. He was a co-founder of the Opelousas Orthopedic Clinic in 1969 before establishing Mayer Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic in 1978. He was also one of the original founders of Doctor's Hospital. He practiced orthopaedic medicine for 42 years before retiring in 2010. Dr. Mayer practiced all aspects of orthopaedic surgery, but gravitated towards orthopaedic trauma. Dr. Mayer participated in emergency room call rotation until retirement in 2010.
He enjoyed traveling, collecting knives, and hunting with his sons and friends. He especially enjoyed spring, when he could be found in the woods of Mississippi hunting turkeys. He was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be sadly missed by all who were a part of his life.
Survivors include three sons, Marc B. Mayer of Youngsville; John L. Mayer and wife Kenley of Woodworth; Frederick J. Mayer and wife Sheryl of Opelousas; and three grandchildren, Caroline, Sara, and Elijah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Frederick Joseph Mayer and Evelyn Devalcourt Mayer; one brother, Frederick J. Mayer, one sister, Evelyn Mayer Lugert, and his wife, Elaine Ledoux Mayer.
Per his wishes, a private memorial service will be held for family members. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to charity of your choice.
