Dorothy Springer

October 20, 1923 — August 18, 2008

A Memorial service for Mrs. Dorothy Dardeau Nixon Springer will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 12:00 pm noon at Lafond Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas. Rev. Francis Fontenot will conduct the service. There will be a graveside service at a later date at Forest Park Garden of Gethsemane in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Springer was born October 20, 1923 in Opelousas, the daughter of Clovis H. Dardeau and Helen Sandoz Dardeau. She moved to Houston, Texas in 1926 and returned to Opelousas in 2006. She passed away August 18, 2008 at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

She loved her family, friends, gardening, games of all kinds, watching the ticker tape, her beach houses and her native state, Louisiana. She remained fiercely interested in politics, a lifelong member of the Republican National Committee and was a devoted fan of all news channels. She loved to read and for many years would write editorial comments to the local papers. She loved to travel, meet new people, refused to have an empty nest and hosted three exchange students from Japan when she lived in The Woodlands, Texas. She also loved the Texas Hill Country, especially the Nixon Ranch near New Braunfels. She also loved parties and entertaining, holidays and just being at home. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.

A special thanks to Journey Hospice and their caring devoted staff; her two care givers, Sheila Ross and Linda Stelly, whom she called her girl scouts and all the friends and neighbors who visited her often.

She is survived by a daughter, Belle Nixon McKinney and her husband, Glen D. McKinney, of Opelousas; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Dardeau, of New Braunfels, TX.; grandsons, Lawrence Todd Hyman of Opelousas and Paul David Shute of San Diego, CA; 1 step-daughter, Lisa M. Springer Edwards of Fort Worth, TX; 6 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 nephews, Robert Dardeau Lancaster and his spouse, JoAnne, of Houston, TX; Thomas Moore Lancaster and his spouse, Gay, of Woodlands, TX; 2 nieces, Dorothy Lancaster McCoppin and her husband, Tom, of Lake McQueeney, TX and Patricia Lancaster Long and her husband, David, and a special cousin and friend Suzanne Spaulding of Opelousas, La.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clovis Hippoman Dardeau and Helen Sandoz Dardeau; her sister, Helen Sandoz Tootsie Dardeau; her husbands, Jeddy Darr Nixon and John E. Springer; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Nixon Shute Green and a son-in-law, Richard M. Green.
