Opelousas Funeral services will be held for Darrell Lee Nubbin Elston at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014, in the LafondArdoin Funeral Home in Opelousas, La. Brother Benji Richard, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Port Barre, will conduct the service. Burial will be held in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.
Mr. Elston, age 82, a resident of Port Barre, La. and a native of Flora, Illinois, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at his residence.
Darrell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Port Barre, the Opelousas Elks Lodge 1048 and the Lafayette Petroleum Club was LAGCOE Looey VIII and IX. His oilfield career began at the age of 16 when he started rough necking in Illinois. He then moved to Texas where he met his wife, Irma. He then worked for Pernie Bailey Drilling Company as a drilling consultant for many years. He made tool pusher at the age of 23 and traveled around the world on land and sea and retired from the oil field at the age of 78. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
Survivors are his daughter, Lisa E. Rangelov and her husband, Dimitar, of Macomb, Michigan his son, Shawn D Elston and his wife, Tina, of Lafayette, La. and his grandchild, Sydney Brooke Elston.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Irma Smith Elston his parents, Byron and Grace Tackitt Elston and his stepfather, Jack Jones.
Visitation will begin at the LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Friday, February 28, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until service time.
