Opelousas - Funeral services for Charles J. Matthews will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home Parlor in Opelousas with visitation being held at 10:00 a.m. until time of services. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas. Deacon Dwayne Joubert will officiate the services.
Charles, age 85, died on Friday, April 14, 2017, at his residence in Poplarville, Mississippi.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War where he was wounded and received two purple hearts. He enjoyed deer hunting and spending time at his camp. Charles loved dancing at the VFW in Kiln, Mississippi and especially enjoyed relaxing on his front porch in his rocking chair. Charles will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his sons, Timothy Matthews, Charles Matthews; his daughter, Mrs. William "Linda" Murphy all of Poplarville, MS and Ann Goff, who was like a daughter to Charles. He is also survived by his brother, Curtis Matthews of Carriere, MS, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by wife, Mary Lambert Matthews; his son, William Gene Matthews and his grandson, PFC Brian Keith Matthews.
Pallbearers will be Joe Matthews, Timmy Matthews, Tony Eliser, J.P. Tassin, Bruce Matthews, Dennis Johnson.
