Bette Castille was the most wonderful wife, mom, and grandmother, a precious gift to us. She was our best friend, our source of comfort and advice. A devout Catholic, her faith guided her life and inspired ours. She passed away at home on December 22, 2015 in time to wish Jesus a Happy Birthday in person. The pain of realizing just how much she will be missed is yet ahead of us; the peace we feel that her suffering is finally over is with us now.
She was born on October 18, 1935, and moved many times during her school years, having moved four times in the fourth grade alone. She skipped the 11th grade and went on to graduate Valedictorian in 1953. Three years later she graduated from Our Lady of the Lake Nursing School in Baton Rouge and began a career in a field that she simply adored. Months later she married her high school sweetheart, Nathan. She was one of the original five nurses to open the newly built Opelousas General Hospital. She spent many years doing private duty nursing and later worked as the first Director of Nurses at Senior Village Nursing Home at its original location. After decades spent caring for her family and patients, her last months were eased by wonderful caregivers.
Many of her retirement years were filled with fun, family, friends, and fishing at her heaven-on-earth camp in Holly Beach. Throughout it all, she never ceased to pursue her passions of sewing, gardening, and reading, leaving behind countless quilts, clothes, and draperies that she had sewn. She was a lifelong LSU Tiger fan and relentlessly followed their football and basketball games.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Nathan; 2 of her 4 children, Peggy (James) Daniel and Jeff Castille; 3 grandchildren: Steve, Leighanne, and Meagan Daniel; brother, Donald Thibodeaux; loyal friend and former college roommate, Alice Aymond; amazing Godmother, Etta Mouille; and 2 spoiled rotten cats: Brother and Sister.
She was preceded in death by 2 sons: Gary and Gerard Castille; parents, Helen and Louis Thibodeaux and beloved friend and cousin, Sis LaPorte.
Family and friends are invited to sign and view the online guestbook at www.lafondardoin.com.
