Bessie Fontenot

Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial for Bessie Landry Fontenot, age 93, will be held in the St. Landry Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2010, followed by interment in the Bellevue Memorial Park. The Reverend Jim Brady will be the celebrant.
Ms. Fontenot who was a native of Basile and a resident of Opelousas, died on Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Opelousas General Health System.
Ms. Bessie and her husband raised their children while sharecropping in Lewisburg. Once their children were grown, the family moved to Opelousas where she worked as a seamstress at Abdallas and Austins Menswear as well as volunteering with the local Red Cross with further training as a nurses aide. She was also known as a gracious hostess who treated her family and friends to specialty candies, cakes, and great Cajun cooking. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her sons, James Fontenot of the Dominican Republic and Marvin Fontenot and wife Karen of Slidell daughter, Janet Lamb of Lafayette daughterinlaw Lynne Webre Scewczyk and husband Joe of Opelousas grandchildren, Stacey Reaux Richard, Darla Barnett Brett, Marc Fontenot Tamara, Nicole Freehill Stephen, and Jason Fontenot greatgrandchildren, Hailey Reaux, Danielle David, Ashley Fontenot Brandon, Brook David, Hunter David, Noelle Fontenot, Jesse Fontenot, and Liam Freehill greatgreat grandchildren, Korryn Young and Layla Fontenot.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nolton Fontenot parents Gil and Lezo Landry grandson, Michael Fontenot brothers, Elmer, Aubrey and Hubert Boo Landry and a sister, Gertie Mae Bellard.

Pallbearers will be James, Marvin, and Jason Fontenot, Richard Reaux, Murphy Carrier, Jr., and Leo Bernard. Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Scewczyk and Galen Landry.

Visiting will be held in LaFondArdoin Funeral Home of Opelousas from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 and will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. A rosary will be prayed on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
