Berton Fontenot

Opelousas - Funeral services for Berton Fontenot will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2021, in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel in the Lafond Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas. Deacon Tom Lindsay will officiate the service.  Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 11, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  in the Skip Montet Memorial Chapel in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas.  A Rosary will be prayed at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.

Mr. Fontenot, age 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 8, 2021, at the Opelousas General Health System.

Berton served his country proudly in the United States Army.  He worked as a motor mechanic for many years in the oilfield. He was very talented in many aspects of music such as singing French, old Classic Country, and Elvis tunes, and playing many instruments like the guitar, fiddle, and harmonica. He enjoyed watching many sports like college football and rooting on his LSU Tigers. His biggest accomplishment in life was his loving family which he helped raise like his own. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Annie Janice Fontenot of Opelousas; his son, Timothy Louis Bernard and wife, Karla of Plaisance; his daughters, Becky Ortego and husband, Skipper of Opelousas; Donna Bernard of Slidell, and Cynthia Foret of Opelousas; his grandchildren Janice Guidry and husband, Gerard; Hollie Stagg and husband, Scott; Celia Drury and husband, Tim; Nicholas Foret, Chris Ortego and wife, Heather; TJ Bernard and wife, Gretchen; and William Higginbotham and wife, Rebecca; thirteen great- grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walton and Clammy Fontenot; and his son-in-law, James Larry Foret.

Pallbearers will be Nicholas Foret, Gerard "Jerry" Guidry, Scott Stagg, Chris Ortego, TJ Bernard, Tyler Drury, Bailey Guidry, and Tim Drury. Honorary Pallbearers will be Timothy Bernard and Skipper Ortego
