Opelousas A beautiful wife, mother, grandmother and songbird has passed from among us.
Barbara Quebedeau Larriviere, 74, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at
Opelousas General Health System after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held
Monday, January 18, 2010 at 10:00 am in the La FondArdoin Funeral Home Chapel. Fr. Paul Bienvenu, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church will officiate. Visitation is from 8:00 am until the time of service. Entombment will be in the St. Francis Regis Catholic Church Cemetery in Arnaudville.
Mrs. Larriviere was born in Opelousas, Louisiana and was preceded in death by her
parents, L.A. Quebedeau and Louise Mallet Quebedeau and one brother, Jessie.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Francis Bernard Larriviere, formerly of
Lafayette two sons, Sidney Larriviere, his wife Dr.Melanie and Alo Larriviere two
grandsons, Liam and Keenan of Houston, TX and David Larriviere of Hartford, Ct.
Ms. Larriviere graduated from AIC now Opelousas Catholic and attended SLI. She was
Ms. Red Bird and worked for Dezauche and Sons in the 1950s. She sang with the Blue
Room Gang, traveling and singing French music with local greats like Rod Bernard. She
was active in the Opelousas Mardi Gras and Yambilee festivals. After her marriage, in
1959, she moved with her husband to Beaumont. Her husband worked as an electrical
engineer for Gulf States Utilities until his retirement. They returned to Opelousas to live
in 1992.
She was an active member of the church choir at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in
Opelousas and the Acadiana French Choir based in St. Martinville until the time of her
death.
